We met with Chloe to talk about her work, her inspirations, and how she got to where she is today. Read on to learn more about her and the wonderful art she creates!
Where do you get inspiration from?
Mainly the outdoors, nature, flowers, and animals. Even if I don't get directly inspired by something I see when outdoors, I always feel motivated after some time outside. A walk in a park, watching animals, going for a bike ride, or even just sitting on the grass. It's amazing what getting some fresh air can do for you. I've often thought that if I couldn't work with any other subject matter I would have to get a job outside!
How do you create your pieces? What's your technique and working process?
I always start by hand painting my illustrations or patterns using watercolors and gouache paints. I then scan the illustrations in and clean them up digitally. I tend to keep the digital versions as close to the hand-painted version as possible because I prefer them to have that hand-created feel, rather than looking too digital. Once the illustration is just right I print out a test, then I make any final adjustments before it's finalized and ready to go. How long each piece takes depends on the subject and how detailed the illustrations are.
How does a workday in your life look like?
My typical workday starts by processing orders (I do this on a Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), I then check my emails, do any admin bits and bobs and then, either work on commissions or developing my business and new products. I usually take a lunch break as well, of course. I also try to go for a walk every day even if it's just a 10 min one! It's important to me that I get some fresh air every day even if it's just for a bit. Plus, there's really no better way to get inspired than to be out in nature.
What is 'home' for you?
Home to me is where I feel most relaxed. I get that feeling in my home, and also when I visit the south coast in the UK. I just love the sea breeze and the sound of the waves. It's so calming. Other than that, home to me is where I'm happiest. My favorite place in it is my studio, surrounded by my work and all my supplies! Just being around the things I use to create helps me de-stress. It's like therapy to me!
What's your favorite room in the home?
My favorite room in our house is our extension, it has french doors and faces the garden. I like how you can sit there and feel like you're outside no matter what the weather! But really, I do love the entire place. Every room has its own character and feels special and personal to me. So honestly, it's hard for me to pick a favorite
How do you decorate your walls?
Our walls are all white, I like to keep things neutral and calm, and then add color through art and colorful accessories! I want it to feel cozy but also playful. It definitely makes me happy just walking around the house knowing that everything in there is beautiful. Plus, I always include personal things. I have a lot of photos of family around, and I also try to include bits and pieces from my travels
What’s it like working with Lime & Lou?
I loved working with Lime & Lou! I got to design patterns and illustrations for exciting products. I also love the style, as I love adding color through accessories, and the products are perfect for the style that we have in our house. That neutral white and then pops of color. The fact that things are so personalized is a big plus for me too - it makes every piece unique.
